Training Options at Barrington Library

Our philosophy

All the training we deliver at Barrington Library is aimed at making you confident in finding, evaluating, using and sharing information efficiently and effectively.

Our programme

Our training programme contains the following -

  • Induction

All students and staff at DA-CMT get an induction with the Library. Students are done by course this is where you will be taught the basics of using the Library and receive a copy of the Library Student Handbook. Staff have an individual session set up as part of their college induction programme where we cover everything you need to know to get you started including key resources and setting up key journal alerts. For academic staff, we will also want to learn all about your areas of research and where you publish.

  • Information skills sessions

This is more in-depth training for students on discovering quality information sources. Ideally we like to work with academics to embed these sessions into modules for more effective learning. More about this programme.

  • 1-2-1 sessions

You can request an individual session with your Information Subject Specialist at any time. Students can use their course page to make an appointment.

  • PhD training

PhD classes are run at several points throughout the year to help support both the initial and write-up stages of the literature review. We normally run these as two strands: Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Engineering. PhD students are also invited to a 1-2-1 session with their Information Subject Specialist in the Library to cover individual resources.

  • Lunchtime training topics

We run a regular programme of update refresher sessions for DA-CMT staff and students throughout the academic year. You will need to be a member of Barrington Library in order to book a place online. All sessions take place in Library Group Study Room 1 unless otherwise indicated. More information is given at the foot of this page on what we have covered to date, along with the session handout, so even if you missed a session, or just want a quick refresher, this will let you know what we covered. There is also an opportunity to suggest a new topic for training.

  • In the near future we also hope to contribute select training through the Staff Development programme
